The Dark Night

For all you batman fans, here are some new images from The Dark Night. I think the reason I like Christan Bale is because he reminds me most of Michael Keaton. He does a good job, and Heath Ledger as the joker!! Batman rocks! You can check out all of the images here.

Ratatouille

Tonight a group of us went to "El Capitan Theater" in Hollywood for opening weekend of Ratatouille. I have been waiting for this film for a long while and it definitely did not disappoint.
The colors, the characters, the story, the animation was ALL beautiful. I felt great when the movie ended, like I had not felt in a long time after seeing an an animated film, or even any film. And the whole El Capitan experience was pretty good too. A bunch of Disney characters showed up on stage before the show and they danced to past and present classic Disney tunes. I hope everyone gets a chance to see it. I'm looking forward to more films like this. Wishful thinking!

Disneyland Weekend

This weekend we took a fun trip to Disneyland for the opening of the Finding Nemo submarine ride, and I actually rode it with old John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, who was making the "mine, mine, mine" seagull noise throughout the whole ride. Nice work all you guys who worked on it!! It was my first trip to Disneyland, so I got the full on experience and enjoyed all the awesome rides. I think space mountain was my favorite. I wanna go back..

Moving!

Yes, It's been a while. But Hey, I'm back. It was only a matter of time before I made the move to the west coast. Starting the new year I'll be moving to San Francisco to work for Industrial Light & Magic on Pirates of the Caribbean : At Worlds End. I'm very excited to get a chance to work on this movie, I've always been a fan of the Pirates movies, so I'm pretty excited about this one. Plus I'm excited to live in California for the first time, especially the Bay Area!!

The Ant Bully Premiere

This past Saturday was the first crew premiere of The Ant Bully in Dallas. It was great to go back and see all my old friends from DNA and finally see the movie. The movie turned out really nice I think everybody was pretty impressed with the final product. The overall pacing of the film was great, and the lighting and the renders were beautiful to look at. I think this film turned out better than most people expected, so lets hope it does well in the theaters! The Ant Bully hits theaters and IMAX on July 28th. Make sure to go check it out! As for me, I have been enjoying a LOOONNNGGG summer vacation and am still unsure of what will be happening next. I should know within the next month, and i'll be sure to post about it! Until then, happy animating!

Time for a break...

Well i know its been a while since a post. Not that ANYONE reads this at all! But we have been finishing up animation on The Ant Bully and may 5th is my last day at DNA. It was a great experience and I met some wonderful and talented people there. I will be going on an extended vacation to do some traveling and stuff. Im actually looking forward to this after crunching on the last 2 films I was on. It will be a nice break. Im not sure what will come next.... a short film? Some painting? practice some 2d animation? I dunno, we shall see... Whatever it be, I'll be sure to post about it. Untill then, Addios...

Reference!

So i've been wanting to write about this because i think its a helpful topic. Reference! So why use reference? How do you get good reference? Personally I use it on almost every shot I animate.

Now dont get me wrong! There are always your masterminds who lock themselves away for 5 days and emerge with this beautiful peice of work. But if your like me and use reference all the time you realize how helpful it can be! After all, the idea is to get the best possible performance that you can!

So how might you get some good reference? Here is what I do.... Usually, when I go in to shoot reference for an acting shot I usually loop the audio (if any) a bunch of times. I actually try to forget that I will be eventually animating this shot, and I act it out naturally, without thinking about it to much. The point is to get something fresh, and see what comes naturally instead of trying to think about what guestures you might be able to use. Usually I'll grab at least one more person to act it out for me as well, so I can get a new and different perspective on it. If it is a shot with multiple characters I'll get a buddy to act it out with me. Then maybe I will switch roles, all to get some different ideas flowing. I also will use life action movies or even animated movies to gather up ideas, just so i can have all kind of options when it comes time to animate.

Its not a bad idea to gather up as much as you can, get alot of ideas to work with. I think its a great step in planning your animation to get the most out of your shot. Using reference is OK! Get different people to act it out for you as well, see what you can come up with! Its a helpful step to finiding out that special something to throw in your shot that will make it MONEY! So try shooting more reference if you can during the planning of your shot and see if it helps!
